Using a KM Team

Studies show that the most valuable KM services team or unit is a separate entity within an organization.  KM processes support knowledge processes, which in turn support business processes.  It is in the interest of the process manager to leverage the expertise of this group to help increase its business process performance.

The KM Group plays a role similar to other internal services groups within the enterprise.  Separate groups within the enterprise commonly manage these secondary processes.  A manager might turn to Human Resources for hiring and training, an Office of Economics for business intelligence, or a Business Process Redesign Group to make changes to her processes.  When she needs help to set up a KM program, she should use the KM group as consultants and managers.

Who should make up the KM team?  Some roles that will help to ensure a KM team's success include:

  • Knowledge or practice leader
  • Knowledge economist
  • Corporate knowledge officer
  • Knowledge manager
  • Knowledge environment engineer
  • Knowledge technologist
  • Project manager
  • Team leader
  • Scribe
  • Facilitator

You have now completed a review of KM concepts, the foundation for Knowledge Management and innovation.  These concepts will be discussed in more depth in the Certification and Graduate Programs.
